No One Warned Me About This: The Sweet, Messy Truth of Your First Newborn

When I was expecting my first baby, I heard all the usual advice: “Sleep now.” “It goes so fast.” “You’ll figure it out.” All true… but none of it quite prepared me for what those first weeks would actually feel like once my baby was in my arms.

What no one warned me about was how emotional everything would be.

After my first son was born, my heart felt wide open—tender, sensitive, and a little overwhelmed. I remember standing in my living room trying to put a DVD into the player and suddenly bursting into tears. Nothing was wrong. I just… cried. Looking back now, I realize it was love stretching me in a brand-new way. Have you had one of those “why am I crying right now?” moments yet?

The exhaustion didn’t help. Newborns don’t know day from night, and those quiet Midwest nights can feel extra long when you’re rocking a tiny human while the rest of the world sleeps. I remember wondering, Am I doing this right? Shouldn’t I have this figured out by now? But the truth is—this is the figuring it out.

What helped most were small, kind-to-myself changes. Multiple diaper-changing stations around the house meant less scrambling and more breathing. Tiny wins matter in this season. What’s one small thing that could make your days feel a little easier right now?

And then there were the moments that filled my cup: a friend dropping off a latte, a warm meal on the porch, a quick shower or a short walk outside. Those little things felt huge. When was the last time you did something just for you—even something tiny?

I also learned how much my body needed gentle care. Staying hydrated, moving a little,

and giving myself grace helped soften the emotional edges.

Not fix everything—but enough to feel grounded again.

The days felt long, and I felt pressure to “get back to normal.” But rest had to come first. The house could wait. Healing and loving my baby were the only real priorities. What if today’s only goal is rest and connection?

Then, slowly, things shifted. Around month three, the fog lifted. I felt more confident. Joy took up more space. If you’re in the thick of it right now, hanging on by a thread—this part doesn’t last forever. There is light ahead, mama.

Now, what surprises me most is what I miss: the tiny fingers, the sleepy stretches, the way my babies fit so perfectly in my arms. I see this all the time with new parents I work with here in Northwest Indiana—once the newborn stage passes,

it’s hard to remember just how tiny they once were.

That’s why I love newborn photography. Not for perfection, but for preserving the little details that fade too quickly—the scrunched toes, tiny hands, peaceful faces. Pieces of a season that deserves to be remembered.

If you’re expecting your first baby and feeling emotional, unsure, or tender, know this: you’re not behind. You’re not failing. You’re becoming. One day at a time.

And one day, you’ll look back and realize just how strong you were 🤍
